The summer season has landed and even if it doesn’t always bring the sunshine, it sure does bring the trends. SS17/18 looks are hotter than ever. If you’re feeling spoilt for choice, we wouldn’t blame you… To make summer holiday shopping simpler, we checked out the masses of catwalk hits and street style moments to bring you the five top trends of this summer.
The pattern du jour with the most standout is vibrant hot house florals. As seen at Versace, Gucci, House of Holland and Edun, it’s the season’s top tropical print. It’s time to turn up the heat in a punchy palette of rainbow colours and almost neon shades. Pair spicy and zesty tones against graphic black and white for big impact. As part of the summer’s Psychotropical trend, floral print gets hyper-natural – think super exotic blossoms and spikey fronds of green. What’s more, the print should be detailed, dense and large-scale to ensure maximalism. This look is brave.

At the Valentino, Stella McCartney and Christian Dior shows, bright red was our favourite colour of the moment. Continuing from the AW17/18 collections, red hues are intense and dramatic. The key to getting this look right is to style in one tone of red. On the catwalk, we admired red worn head-to-toe in a bold statement. The provocative shade was reworked on lightweight outerwear, fluid trousers and across jersey or silk chiffon pieces.
If you only buy one new item this summer (but who are we kidding, really?) make it the asymmetric dress. Asymmetry and conceptual cuts were strong at Joseph and 3.1 Phillip Lim for SS17/18 and beyond. Dresses are artful and considered, with an uneven aesthetic forming a key silhouette this summer. Reassembled, asymmetrically wrapped and dissected, soft materials are employed to create fresh looks and individual shapes. For a contemporary spin, focus on voluminous proportions.

Cali Girls is the theme we’re highlighting for your all-summer-long look. AW17/18 was all about the American subculture theme and designers now look to Californian cool to drive the trend into summer. Take a look at the Coach, Acne Studios, Moschino and Gucci shows for major inspiration. Go for a retro touch with embroidery and patchwork and wear your denim jeans high-rise and flared. Indeed, Americana style denim is at the heart of this theme. Mix with a slick 1970s vibe with a nod to LA’s downtown girls, or work in some western Cali style for the beach and beyond.

For your fifth top trend for summer, we’ve chosen exquisite sheers as the most exciting material you need in your wardrobe now. Introducing a high level of intricacy, sheer feminine dresses and delicate gowns serve as the designer canvas for embroidery, fil coupé compositions and wonderfully executed appliqué. From Fendi and Prada to Valentino and Louis Vuitton, gentle opacity play was admired with metallic shimmer, plus scattered sequins, present throughout.
