We uncover the trends that are going to define your wardrobes this autumn and winter.

Up first is a contemporary layering story we’re calling the Modern Romantic trend. Think unexpected pairings with proportion-play styling at the fore. Androgynous tailoring and deconstructed puffa jackets move the look into experimental territory; meanwhile, extreme sleeve and shoulder silhouettes drive flamboyant romance. There’s a hint to the 1980s via vinyl and sequins, used mostly on outerwear in a casual context. Don’t miss lace-up corset details along with dark florals too.

The 80s influence our second trend, 1980s Extravagance.

Born ready for party season, choose a vibrant colour palette and exaggerated proportions. We’ve spotted a fresh styling direction courtesy of the oversized double-breasted blazer, now worn as a dress. Snap up ruched lace blouses, off-the-shoulder cocktail dresses and vinyl miniskirts too. Throw on a puffa jacket to complete the look – just make sure it’s in colourful animal print.

The Harlem trend is anchored by grunge and streetwear looks. Easy-to-wear layers combine hoodies, deconstructed knits and puffa jackets with slouchy boyfriend fits. Essential items reference the urban 90s with new pieces – such as the shearling jacket – now featured in metallics and racer red. Grunge checks and slick synthetics are also admired.

It’s maximalist and ladylike, romantic with an eccentric edge. The story is dominated by black, presenting gothic undertones and a sense of drama. Day-to-night dressing is simple thanks to individual prints and unexpected styling; offset a feminine dress or tie-up blouse with heirloom accessories.

As temperatures cool, a darker take on florals emerges with the Evening Folk trend. Youthful, with strong Americana influences, go out in embroidered overlay dresses and fur-trimmed bikers. PVC miniskirts and jacket co-ords take on a subversive edge alongside crushed velvet jumpsuits and dark lace body-con dresses. Hello hero partywear pieces!

Urban Rebel sees genres collide.

There are 1990s sports influences welcoming body-con basics and metallic puffa jackets teamed with teddy fleece jackets, kilts and PVC skirts. Wear with the boyfriend tee or a hoodie and style with mesh. Choose intense red, black and white in sporty stripes, tartan check or playful graphics.

For AW17, Oversized and Androgynous is the go-to silhouette and look when it comes to tailoring. Updated with strong shoulders, simple blazer and Crombie jackets are found outsized and in sartorial check for a borrowed-from-the-boys appeal. Channel a minimalist-maximalist vibe in floor-skimming trouser lengths and outfits that merge pared-back silhouettes with unexpected bold pops of colour.

Complete your shopping spree with the Retro Reality trend, which focuses on cosy fabrics and chintzy florals in a rich colour palette. Tapping into the Simple Reality trend (as seen across the catwalks), a practical look is achieved via slouchy boyfriend coats in classic wool or wide-leg silhouettes in corduroy. Padded-shoulder blouses take note of the 80s, whilst a 70s air is felt across studious skinny-fit roll-necks and slouchy suits.
