Menswear’s love of grunge is set to continue with the Love Lost trend. Cut-and-sew denim is updated with a focus on offbeat layering. Try out retooled denim, spliced band tees and hand-painted leathers to inform your anarchic look. A subversive edge is celebrated with amped-up punk references – think oversized hardware or bondage tape details. Counteract with luxe mohair knits to keep things fresh.

1990s skate looks become relevant once more, now with a smartened-up attitude, for the theme we’re calling Copenhagen.

For AW17, layering is integral so work oversized sweats and boxy hoodies or choose a zipped funnel-neck top as your essential base layer. For a grown-up twist, step out in a classic mac and wide-leg trousers. It’s all about hi-lo styling so offset a modular wardrobe of sports-driven separates with smarter items.

River Island

For Smart Manhattan, a 1940s undercurrent is felt with smart-casual outfits taking note from the season’s Modern Retro trend. The new approach to tailoring sees traditional suits styled with trainers, core knits or casual fur-trimmed parkas. The pinstripe shirt is back, whilst cropped trouser lengths gather pace. Experiment with a studious style in rich one-colour looks and plush corduroys.

Another smart-casual trend for the new season is Parisian Prep.

Here, a masculine palette of grey, navy and brown is invigorated by preppy purple and yellow. Hi-low styling is key again as perennial sports looks merge with tailoring. Invest in crisp white trainers and work them against cropped, easy-fit trousers with a tailored retro checked coat.

It’s time to update your staple items with Statement Slogans. Outsized and eye-catching, bright colour bases prevail with monochrome options as well. Utility styles are updated with slogan renditions. With a nod to the post-Soviet movement, check out lowbrow early 1990s USSR-inspired aesthetics and Cyrillic lettering.

New for autumn comes tactile fabrics such as teddy fleece, shearling and faux fur, which are prominent in the Cosy Plush trend. Ensure you snap up pieces in classic shades to keep the look accessible. Panelled designs are an option for the less daring, whereas the brave can opt for directional all-over renditions from the hoodie to a statement coat. Plush fabrics elevate denim jackets and nylon bombers too.

topman terrace boy trends

Up next is the Terrace Boys look; think 1990s football casuals informing overall nostalgic sports references. Choose polo tops and the essential tracksuit, now sartorially styled with smarter pieces such as a checked car coat. Your new hero pieces? Runners and fan scarves make the list. Primary colours are popular on cropped and anti-fit volume items, refreshed by bold typographic placements, colour blocking and sporty trims.

Lastly, providing the antithesis to 90s looks, Modern Prep showcases smart-casual outfits with a penchant for clean lines. There’s zip-neck details and must-have simple trainer styling. Go for utilitarian edge in bold bi-colour styles or modernise perennial shirting with spliced panels on striped designs. Pick out wide-leg trousers this season and boxy jackets too.
