As seen at Dries Van Noten and Jil Sander, winter whites are key once more. Whereas beforehand it was a directional color focused on athleisure items, now it offers minimalist elegance. Choose a smooth surface such as patent leather for a clean silhouette.

Spiced browns, popular at Stella McCartney and Salvatore Ferragamo, is a popular choice for footwear with a nod to evolving 1970s references. Warm and familiar, go for chestnut, rich cognac and butterscotch shades in smooth leather or faux exotic skins.

A contemporary alternative to black for AW17 is deep navy (admired at Chloé and Paul Smith). Novel yet familiar, the tone is in line with the Femme Moderne trend coming out of the Paris shows. Refined navy lends polished and luxurious appeal.

Don’t miss thigh boots. From Roksanda and Prada to Fendi and Yeezy, slouch fitted or skin-tight designs turned heads in fierce high-shine leather, super-soft suede or more traditional grained leathers. As long as you have the height, pointed, square and round toe shapes all work well.

Making waves at Oscar de la Renta, Christian Dior and Céline, pointed pumps offer a fresh direction. A dolphin nose and sharp toe can be mixed with subtle low heels or daring stiletto heights, proving the trends’ versatility. Wear yours with fishnet tights or socks for a flirty finish.

Elsewhere, closed mules transitioned from SS17. Choose them in peached suedes, opulent velvets, supple leathers or delicate satins depending on the occasion. Take inspiration from Nina Ricci, Joseph and Mary Katrantzou where the elegant piece was seen in an array of heel heights.
