Start back in style

After a top summer, you may be going back to the office or school soon. So do so in style.
First up, here are the colours and patterns we’re into for next season.

With a contemporary and subtly sporty feel, off-kilter colour blocking has made it from the AW17/18 catwalks and into the mainstream. Neutrals anchor the palette across smart daywear, with offbeat sunflower yellow and tomato red adding fresh colour pops. Set to continue right round into the next warmer season, colour blocking menswear is popular in four-shade combinations or two-tone options.

Suitable for all ages, stripes are back and the focus is on the chest. Colourful block striping was shown on the catwalks and is commercially interpreted with chest stripes lending a smart sportif feel. Think rugby shirt designs or the famous Breton stripe. This easy-to-wear trend evolves from summer’s take on nautical stripes into classic bold white bands set against a darker base knit.

Plaid is another leading pattern, now taking on an eclectic twist. Fresh styling and offbeat interpretations elevate the tried-and-tested print as it lands on fashion territory. Go for a youthful feel in bright tones, choose deconstructed and reconstructed patchwork styles with a hippie grunge edge, or be influenced by urban lumberjacks. There’s also punk-inspired tartan up for grabs too.

In fact, elevated punk looks are big news; check out the Nightcrawlers trend to get the look. Tartans and dark checks return, adding a smartened sensibility when paired with bleached denim. On denim jackets and shirting, outsized proportions and bold graphics inject an experimental feel. Elsewhere, graphic patchwork and hand-drawn style prints make outfits directional.

When it comes to denim updates, enter the wide cut jean. Boyfriend styles have dominated womenswear for multiple seasons and the easy-fit baggy jean is the new men’s equivalent. See them as a backlash to super-skinny styles that dominated recent years. Focus on relaxed rather than oversized for a less exaggerated finish.

Denim pieces are also inspired by the ongoing 1990s trend, now moving in a more sporty direction. Mix throwback sports-brand hoodies, football scarves or chunky outerwear with slouchy denim styles. Your key piece has to be the classic trucker jacket, worn together with looser, wider denim in clean cuts.

Ideal for getting back into work mode, sartorial fusion is the theme tapping into the hybrid, genre-mixing message across the menswear market. Look to outfits combining sportswear with tailored pieces for a new take on fashion-led workplace attire. The look will get you ready for the cooler seasons in transitional tailoring that works well under winter coats too. Throw in sneakers or a baseball cap at the weekend with a sartorial polo neck crucial for the hi-lo, hybrid aesthetic.
