Your Summer Sandal Update

Summer, the season of sandal shopping. But which sandals should be on your radar?
For fancy feet, choose the pom pom sandal (straight from the Encounter Culture trend). Think rainbow colourways, embroidery and tasseled details for a traveller aesthetic. At Dolce & Gabbana and Sam Edelman, the frivolous summer piece was adorned with trinkets, charms, shells and hand-painted details.

Up next, the growing ghillie gladiator footwear trend. As seen at Chloé, Valentino and ASOS, SS17 has seen the evolution of ghillie-laced details, updating the classic gladiator sandal. Choose neutral tones with gentle hints of pastel adding springtime warmth to looks. Elsewhere, exotic glamour is achieved via shells or dramatic gold hardware.

Give last season’s sliders an update thanks to wrapped, tied, folded and knotted constructions. The staple silhouette meets statement appeal. Single hues admired on suede, patent materials and leathers offer a modern twist to your summer outfit of the day.
For a tougher look this summer, look to Proenza Schouler, Balenciaga and Isabel Marant for inspiration. Their focus on hardware detailing across sandals includes staggered sizes, hardware used as lacing rings or miniature renditions. Inject instant edge with eyelet hardware.

The thong sandal is never far from our summer footwear wardrobe and the essential seasonal shape returns for SS17 and beyond. See Alexander Wang and Oscar de la Renta for a lesson in how to elevate the classic leather shape. Try boho elements such as rope detailing embellishment or punk-inspired hardware buckles. Driving the trend are metallic tones and a dusty pink shade for an elegant touch.
At Marni, the thong slider was a success, both practical and summery. Toe straps add interest to the perennial shape, whereas platform renditions offer a youthful appeal – ideal for beach to bar dressing.

Our sandal report wouldn’t be complete without covering athleisure influence and, yes, the sports sandal is still making waves. Becoming increasingly commonplace, the performance market informs new casual styles with the focus on laidback comfort. Fashion cues are achieved through embellished flatform profiles or vibrant pops of colour. Rubber cleats remain a must too. Prada presented a directional look taking simple cross-strap uppers with the addition of lacing and even all-important ankle straps for the more daring. An authentic 1990s style – air-pocket rubber soles – work for throwback ensembles.

To style, our top tip is SOCKS! Designer giants from Missoni to Roksanda and Versace showcased a flurry of socks and sandals styling within Pre-Summer 17 collections. The pairing nods to an increasingly important transseasonal mood. References included 1940s eclectic, androgynous functional sports, plus 1970s disco, and were seen across extreme heeled iterations and flat slides in equal measure.
